Power Box and Smart Slave manual


Power Box and Smart Slave are the Piroshow system of ignition alternative to the Slave 30 CH 100V. this system, an exclusive Piroshow project, is studied to offer the pyrotechnician some operative and managerial advantages in case of show to make through Master Full, Master Manual o FU.MU. Software.

Power box and Smart Slave are two distinct components of one only system.

They need one each other to be operative. The system is completed by the ID Programmer module.

Operative lightness, manageability and simplicity are their strong points. The system is studied around the same module of single ignition 30 channels for every unit in a way that does not create differences and discontinuity to the pyrotechnician during the phase of project of the show, and so the possibility to decide after the project which module use to manage the ignitions (Slave 30 CH or Smart Slave), depending of the necessities of the type of ignition or on the characteristics of the field of the show.

Smart Slave is the modul, without internal battery, with 30 ignition channels, it is extremely light and compact. Its long and narrow shape make it perfect to be fixed to vertical supports.
Power Box, with its double high performance internal battery, is the module that provide the alimentation to the Smart Slave and permit the operation of ID assignment and line test.
This system allow to reduce the time of management in the phase of project of the show considerably.

Power Box and Smart Slave are projected to be perfectly operative even in difficult climatic and atmospheric conditions. The pyrotechnician will have the only task to clean periodically the dust and the filth from the quick clips connectors of the Smart Slave, from the chromed bushings of connection to the Power Box and, eventually, from the entry with the ID Programmer. Analogue operations will be done on the connector of the case of the Power Box. Piroshow recommend a complete cycle of at least 12 hours to maintain the efficiency and the duration of the battery.

Do not open the module or do any reparation. Danger! Warranty decline.

Contrary to Slave 30 CH 100V, the Power Box – Smart Slave system is not equipped of an autonomous system of planning of ignitions and does not support the ignition through an external TRIGGER impulse.

ATTENTION: Do not confuse the two chromed bushings of the Smart Slave with the connection to the Power Box for a Trigger entry.
Danger of an internal short circuit!

To execute the ignitions present in the Smart Slave it is necessary that it would be managed by a list of ignition charged on the Master Full or FU.MU. software. Once it is managed and planned this way, it will execute the ignition assigned to it, even if they sequential with a time interval of only 0,05 seconds.

Alternately, the ignition present in the Smart Slave can be executed channel by channel in manual ignition modality through Master Manual. In this case to execute series of ignition won’t be possible. (constant, fast, low, planned).

Connection and wiring:

  1. Connection between Power Box and Smart Slave:
    the connection between the two modules have to be done only through the two chromed bushings of the module Power Box and of the Smart Slave too. These connection bushings have no polarity so the operation will be simple and fast. The connection cable can be the telephone cable o a normal electric wire. If necessary, use wires with a more wide section to guarantee to the Smart Slave a higher ignition voltage.
    The connection can be halo or cascade, se the images on the paragraph “How to connect Smart Slaves to Power Box”.
  2. Connection between the Power Box and the Master module or FU.MU. Software:
    use the Piroshow wire equipped with XLR connector with two poles to connect the entries on the back of the back of the case of the Power Box and the ones of the Master Full and of the Master manual. To connect to the FU.MU. Software you have to use the Piroshow Converter module.
    Use the wire equipped with XLR connectors with four poles to use the system of radio communication between the Piroshow modules RTX – 500mW.


1. Start and preliminary activities

Once the switch ON, after the welcome message and the visualization of the firmware version, the display will show the following screen:

The indication OUT:ON indicates that the Power Box is ready to feed the connected Slaves rightly.

The indication MOD:??? indicates that the status modality of the Power Box is not yet defined.

If connected to a Master Full, Master Manual or FU.MU. Software (through Piroshow Converter in this case), the indication will pass automatically to MOD: FIRE, indicating that the Power Box and the Smart Slave system is ready to receive the ignition commands.

If the necessary preliminary activities for the show have been already done and the pyrotechnician put the system in stand-by before the show, the indication will show MOD:STBY.
The caption PUSH OK TO TEST allows to go to the Power Box menu that allows the management of the function of the connected Smart Slave.

Before the access to the functions of the Smart Slave, to attribute a numerical identity that mark it is basic and preliminary to the use of Power Box.

The assignation of a univocal ID to every Power Box allows the Master Full to execute the distance command of the following functions correctly:

  1. To verify the state of charge of the internal batteries
  2. To verify the status (off – stand by – FIRE)
  3. Set the Stand by – FIRE directly from Master Full.

The possibility of a distance command is not active when the Power Box is used with Master Manual or FU.MU. Software, so this function have to be done directly on the Power Box.

1.1 . ID assignment to the Power Box

The assignment of a univocal identity number, organized in increasing number to all the Power Boxes present in your fire system, has basic importance in the use and management of the Power Boxes and Smart Slave system through the Master Full module.
Master Full has a complete internal dialogue, command and diagnosis system of all the Power Box connected for the show.

Switch the Power Box On and wait for the start of menu.

Push the up arrow then, keeping it pushed, push the left arrow.

Select an ID between 1 and 16 ( 16 is the maximum number of Power Boxes that a Master Full can manage), push OK.

Choose of an ID

The ID assignment can be considered a definitive act.

In the moment of addition of new Power Box in your fire system, the pyrotechnician have to proceed with the assignment of the IDs to the Power Boxes following the number from 1 to 16 in increasing order.

The presence of Power Boxes with the same ID impede to the Master Full to identify all the Power Boxes present in your fire system.

If, for any case, modify the ID of a Power Box is necessary, repeat the operation already described.

The number of identity of the Power Boxes is instead indifferent when used through Master manual or FU.MU. Software and the Power Boxes will work without any problem even if they have not an increasing order.

Anyway, to avoid any doubt, Piroshow invite the pyrotechnicians to do this activity in the first moments after the purchasing.

1.2 . Batteries charge status control

Switch the Power Box ON and wait for the start screen, push the left arrow:

The display visualize the internal, IN, and exit voltage status.

Push OK to go to the main menu.

IN values:

  1. 12V or more =optimal level
  2. from 11,9 to 11,7 = middle/low charge level (if the show is complex or you need more time to the execution the show could be compromised)
  3. 11,6 or less = Danger! Low battery, not sufficient! Substitute the Power Box or recharge immediately

OUT values:

  1. From 50V to 40V = optimal values
  2. 40V or less = potentially insufficient voltage. Possible problem causes:
    • The Smart Slaves connected to the Power Box are more than 16
      Solution: verify and eventually disconnected the ones in excess
    • There is a short circuit in the line:
      verify how many Smart Slave have been recognized from the ID req function to easily find with part of the line ha the short circuit.
      If no one Smart Slave is recognized it is surely the first one.

The Power Box – Smart Slave system is operative ( this means that is suitable for the ignition/fire) only if it is used through Master Full, Master Manual or FU.MU. Software.

The functions that the system Power Box – Smart Slave can manage independently are the preliminary to the ignition ones; they are all managed by the Power Box, once connected to the Smart Slaves:

  • ID Req
  • ID assignation
  • Line Test
  • Stand by e wake up

Push OK on the main screen to access to this functions.

2. ID Req

Once you are sure that all the Smart Show of the show are rightly connected each other and to the Power Box, you can start the ID Req function of the Smart Slaves. The ID Req done by the Power Box is not a preliminary activity for the ignition, but it is a functional activity for the line test of the Smart Slaves done by the Power Box.

The ID Req function done by the Power Box allows to

  • To establish the bidirectional communication by the Power Box and the Smart Slaves
  • To verify which and how many Smart Slaves are correctly connected to the Power Box.

When you push the OK button you can see the message: “SLAVES START” (=ID Request of all the connected Smart Slaves)

The Power Box shows:

in the upper line: the total number of found Smart Slaves
in the lower line: the lower identity of the found ones

Scrolling with up arrow, the pyrotechnician can visualize which identities have been correctly found.

Problems in the results of the ID Req activity ( the Power Box doesn’t find all the Smart Slaves connected each other or doesn’t find the right identities):

  • there is a short circuit in the wires or they are broken: substitute the wires.
  • there connection/wiring problem between the modules:
    some wire are disconnected or not righty connected, one or more than one wire have a short circuit. Substitute or connect rightly the wires.
  • one or more Smart Slaves have the same identity.

Verify and correct the assigned identities.

Once selected the chosen identity, push OK and go to the next menu that allows to choose between Line test/Stand-by/Exit/ID Assignation or Modification (the last option is present only if only one Smart Slave is connected).

3. ID Assignation to the Smart Slaves

This is the function of the Power Box that allows to assign a numerical entity that mark the identity of the single Smart Slave.

Since this operation have to be done by connecting one by one the Smart Slaves that need to be marked with an ID to the Power Box by using a wire, Piroshow suggest the pyrotechnician to do this operation in the factory or in the show field before the placement of the fireworks (otherwise you will need to move the Power Box near every single Smart Slave with an useful effort).

Piroshow created a small and light ID Programmer to do this operation when the fireworks are already placed.

To assign an ID to the Smart Slave:

    • enter the ID assignation menu and push OK
    • choose a numerical identity between 1 and 126

      In this case we have passed by the identity 1 to the identity 12
    • push OK

To write with an erasable pencil the number of the assigned ID in the white box of the Smart Slave is a good habit.

IMPORTANT: during the assignation of the identity of the Smart Slaves, you have not to forget the Piroshow system consider exactly in the same way the Slave 30CHs and the Smart Slaves, so you have to be careful to not to assign the same ID of a Slave 30 CH to a Smart Slave.

NOTE: the lack of assignation of a personal ID to the Smart Slaves will not allow their identification in the ID REQest through Maste Full, Master Manual and FU.MU. Software.

4. Smart Slave Line Test

The line test is the function that allows to verify the rightness ad the perfect functionality of the ignitions fitted through igniters in a Smart Slave.

This function use the same telephone wire used for the connection of the Power Box and the Smart Slaves, so can be done even near the time of the show when all the Smart Slaves are in the field (better in distant position each other).

The suggested solutions in case of errors and key are the same of the Master Manual:

*: present and functional igniter
: absent or not rightly functional igniter – see Master Full
T: presence of a TRIGGER or problem of impedance ( the number of connected igniters in series is to high in that channel)

If there is any error in the test:

Correct the error, re-start the Smart Slaves and re-do the test.

5. Stand By / FIRE

Once you have do all the needed operations to verify the right setting of the show, select STAND BY to put the Power Box and so the Smart Slave in low use to avoid a useful usage of the batteries before the show.

When you restart the Power Box the starting screen will show.


Push OK to restart the system and you are ready for the show!

If the Power Box is rightly connected to a Master Full, Master Manual or FU.MU. Software (in this case through Piroshow Converter) when you start the Smart Slaves the modality FIRE will start automatically, MOD:FIRE will be shown.


If the Power Box and the Smart Slaves System is connected to Master Full, you can do this operation in the Master Full.

7. Smart Slave

Every Smart Slave has an independent and double internal circuit: the first part, than needs 5V only, has the function to allow the operations of ID assignation and line test, the second part of 50V(a voltage that is really more high than the modules of other factories) is the one that prime the ignition.

The two connectors with silver bushings have the function to receive the power source from the Power Box and to establish the communication through electric wire, a simple telephone wire.

ATTENTION: do not confuse these connectors with a TRIGGER ENTRY!!! The Smart Slaves have no battery so they will never work!

If you use the two silver connectors to connect the Smart Slave to the Power Box and to a Trigger, when the trigger arrives there is a short circuit in the Smart Slave electronics with irreparable damages.

The internal circuit that rules the function of the Smart Slave is an exclusive avantgarde Piroshow Project that guarantee to the pyrotechnician the possibility to plan, economy and reliability warranty that you cannot find products of other companies:

  • the external power source system through the double and powerful battery of the Power Box allows a constant alimentation for every module with exit voltage of the Power Box of 50V.
  • there no possibility of lack of voltage for the length of the conncetion wire, and allows always the possibility to connect at least 15 igniter in series for every channel with the lesser number of modules for the show.-the control of the charge is entrust to the Power Box so this prevent in advance the possibility of short circuit.   • the exclusive internal Piroshow circuit allows the passage on the conncetion wire (a simple electric/telephone wire ) in the power source and in the communication of transmission of the state of the Smart Slave to the Power Box, Master and to FU.MU. Software
  • there a big money saving respect of the use of the 4 poles wire you need for the products of other companies.
  • the two chromed bushings used as entries for the power source/data transmission cable are projected to have no polarity.

Smart Slave will be always functioning, despite of the order of insertion. Really easy to use e time saving in the disposition.

The connector that is on the other side of the Smart Slave respect of the two entry bushings is protected by a hermetic screw cap and have the only function to connect the Smart Slave to the ID Programmer for the operations of ID assignation and the system test.

Quick clips connectors:
Their system with internal anti-sprain spring guarantees an extreme facility to use and first of all reliability and performance warranty.

8. Guaranteed fire voltage

Igniters in parallel: insert two or more igniters in the same couple of connector. The electronic of the Smart Slave does not support connection of igniters in parallel.

igniters in series: an only igniter is connected to the connector, but the electric wire of the igniter are connected through UYB connectors.

The Smart Slave supports the connection igniters in series.

The number of connector you can use is variable and depends on the same causes:

  • On the distance of the Power Box: higher is the length of the wire that connect the devices, higher is the physical effect of voltage loss on the line.
  • On the number of Smart Slaves connected to the Power Box: higher is the number of the Smart Slaves connected, lesser is the voltage for each of them (fire voltage).

Considering this aspects, Piroshow guarantees to all the pyrotechnicians the presence of 30V of fire voltage (in exit) for every Smart Slave connected to the Power Box even when 16 Smart Slaves are connected (the maximum number). Having 30V means you can connect even 15 igniter in series for each of the 30 channels of the Smart Slave!!

9. Modality of connection of the Smart Slaves to the Power Box

  1. Spokes” connection
    Every Smart Slaves is connected to the Power Box through a separated electric wire.
    With this configuration, Piroshow guarantees the voltage of 30V per Smart Slave even at the distance of 1km for single connection wire.
  2. Cascade” connection
    2. When you use this modality, only the first Smart Slave of the system is connected to Power Box.
    The other Smart Slaves are instead connected each other at “cascade”, alike an only wire that connect all the Smart Slaves.

If the distances of the connection wire or wires are higher it is necessary to have 30V of Fire, Piroshow suggests to use an electric with the section higher of the standard of at least 1.5 mm^2 for every conductor.

Once placed the fireworks and done the connection, verify the real voltage is now possible through the line test operation through the Power Box, ID Programmer, Master Full, or Master Manual.

Considering that every igniter use 2V to be operating, you can know how many igniter you can connect in a very simple way: exit voltage/2

ex. 30/2=15
ex. 43/2=21
ex. 26/2=13

The internal electronics of the Smart Slave and the system of power source through Power Box allow to have a minimum interval between an ignition and the other of only 0,05 sec.
Even if it is possible (when each connector is connected to one only igniter), Piroshow suggests the pyrotechnician to not to execute two or more channels at the same time but to use the guaranteed big fire voltage by connecting in series more igniter to execute simultaneously.

Warranty conditions

All the Piroshow product are covered by international warranty for flaws, bugs or malfunctions following the European Directive 1999/44/CE and the Italian D.Lgs. 206/2005.

If the product you receive is not functioning or bad functioning the customer has the right to the substitution or the right of withdrawal, after the immediate communication following the laws.

All the Piroshow products are high tech condensate, the warranty on the right function extend for two years from the date of purchase and depends on the right use of the product, on the right maintenance and on the lack of alteration.

Norms of validity of the warranty:

  • Each module have to be used after the reading of the user manual and the instructions it contains.
  • Be always sure that not authorized people will not go on the field of the show and interfere with the ignition system.
  • The Piroshow modules are appointed to the ignition of fireworks so the their safety and the safety of the show depends even on the right execution of the norms of the single fireworks. Be sure to have a special regard to the ones that are sensible to electromagnetic fields.
  • The Piroshow products that are indicated as resistant to atmospheric agents have to be used with the case hermetically closed. In case this is not possible, the pyrotechnician have to cover the modules to protect them with an adequate covering.
  • Where expressly indicated, the Piroshow products are resistant to heat and to the ashes produced during the execution of the show. Anyway do not position the module too near the fireworks. In any case, the Piroshow module are not resistant to flames.
  • The exits, the doors, and the entries that allow the communication e the wiring between the Piroshow modules are guaranteed in their impermeability only trough a correct use. The hermetic top have to be perfectly closed, in exception of the time you need to connect the wires for the show execution.
  • Use only intact product for the show. If you think there is any problem, do not use the module and do not try to reparations. The use of a not intact module put at risk the health of the pyrotechnician, of his assistants and to public of the show! The inspection and the test of the module is basic in case of rent from other fireworks companies!
  • All the connectors and the entries have to be cleaned after the shoe.
  • Piroshow is the only company that can repair and do the maintenance service. Considering the assembly method and the internal technology, the opening of the module is not authorized and is cause of decline of the warranty

Safety regulations

The following rules have to be followed to better understand the more relevant safety regulations.

The safety regulations were born from our experience and from the daily contact with our customers and permit the safe application of all the components of our of remote-controlled ignition systems. Piroshow is happy to receive further suggestions from the pyrotechnicians to improve the indications that regard the safety in the execution of the shows.

The following safety regulations are part of the instructions of all our systems.

The instructions have to be made available for all the people that are in contact with this aspect of your company.
Every technical system can potentially cause errors.

An erroneous use, damages, usury an ageing advance the introduction of errors.

The Piroshow electronic system of ignition is the most valid support for the pyrotechnician for the electronic ignition of the show and to exalt his artistic creativity, but is in relation with materials, firework, that are dangerous.

This is the motivation that made this rules.

  1. Smoking and keeping tools that can make sparks is always forbidden in the zone of the show.
  2. Implement all the anti-fire actions and aid actions you need based on the fireworks you use.
  3. Respect the National rules, the technical rules and the user instructions of the fireworks and their clauses.
  4. Be sure that unauthorized people can’t access to the fireworks and ignition systems.
  5. Respect the safety zones following the laws and the producer norms. Maintain the extraneous at the right distance from the barriers.
  6. The instructions of the producer of the fireworks have to be respected.
  7. The use of the installation of ignition have to be done after the right preventative measures.
  8. The Piroshow products that are indicated as resistant to the atmospheric agents have to be use with the case with the case hermetically closed. In case this is not possible, the pyrotechnician have to cover the modules to protect them with an adequate covering.
  9. Where expressly indicated, the Piroshow products are resistant to heat and to the ashes produced during the execution of the show. Anyway do not position the module too near the fireworks. In any case, the Piroshow module are not resistant to flames.
  10. Use only intact product for the show. If you think there is any problem, do not use the module and do not try to reparations. The use of a not intact module put at risk the health of the pyrotechnician, of his assistants and to public of the show! The inspection and the test of the module is basic in case of rent from other fireworks companies!
  11. Storms or electrostatic fields that take place before the storm can make chance ignitions. When you notice a storm is arriving, Piroshow suggest to stop the execution of your work for the show and to put in safety the materials you have already put in.
  12. The igniters have to be connected in the specific terminal or quick clips, have the cure that the Slave 30 CH 100V, Easy Fire, Smart Slave modules are off or without connections that provide alimentation. Every pyrotechnic effect is anyway to be consider active in the moment the wires are connected to the unit of ignition regardless the system is set On or Off.
  13. Always control the integrity of the electric wire you connect to the igniters.
  14. Avoid that the fuse and the respective wire have contact with material than can conduct electricity if there is any risk of electrostatic charges.
  15. Always control the integrity of the electric system wires.
  16. Avoid all the sources of early ignition, alike high voltage of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields and sources of voltage.
  17. Mobile phones, radio transmitters and all the instrument with internal batteries are a underestimate danger: if used at the same time of the use of the igniters can be cause of chance ignitions. BE CAREFUL!
  18. Fireworks, depending on their composition, can produce ionized gas. These gas made the air conductor of electricity. Ionizing processes, if are near the wires of high voltage can made deadly overlaps for the people in the vicinity. Consider that air currents on the field can be different from the ones that are in the height of some meters.
  19. Use wires long enough for your safety and for the safety of the system.
  20. During the test or the simulation of the show is better that no pyrotechnician and no person is near the position of the fireworks, even if the testing process of Piroshow systems are extremely safe.
